In January 2006, SEBI introduced a grading system for Indian equity IPOs and the system was kept on pilot mode with 3 agencies doing the grading. After that, taking into account the learnings from this pilot exercise, SEBI made the IPO rating process mandatory from April 2007. As given on the CRISIl Website, "CRISIL IPO Gradings are assigned by CRISIL Equities. It deploys industry experts to assign the IPO Grading. CRISIL Equities works independently from CRISIL Ratings and do not share any confidential information provided to them by their respective clients."
